Buster Keatons The Cameraman :: essays research papers
The Cameraman (Rough Draft) The Cameraman (1928), a MGM Buster Keaton highlight, is one of the last really incredible element movies of the quiet period. From the creative parity it finds between the effortlessness of a very natural storyline and the multifaceted nature of method and cinematography, to the exceptionally engaging and dazzling exhibitions of its entertainers, the film that was almost lost to the records of movie history is a multi-faceted jewel that is cheerful to watch. Effortlessness is one of the large keys to the accomplishment of The Cameraman. The basic plot is of the deep rooted at this point respectable sort (ââ¬Å"hero-sees-young lady, is-knocked-off-feet, makes a huge effort to-be-saw, getting-in a tough situation en-routeâ⬠). It has Buster attempting to get a break as a cameraman into the newsreel division of an acclaimed studio (MGM, and win the expressions of love of the workplace secretary, Sally, played by a delightful Marceline Day. His undertakings land him in a wide range of uproarious circumstances, incorporating a few funny quarrels with the sentimental opponent, a pretentious ââ¬Å"madeâ⬠newsman played by Harry Goodwin. The topical components remain straightforward also. Sharp with pessimism, incongruity raises its comical head time and again. These bits of the film are conveyed with immaculate planning, bound with a little earnestness. One such occurrence is close to the last finish of film when Buster, in a challen ging trick, spares Sally from suffocating. He leaves her oblivious on the shore immediately while he races into a drug store simple yards away to get something to support her. During those couple of seconds, she stirs, and Busterââ¬â¢s rival, who had surrendered her to suffocate so as to spare his own skin, chances upon her similarly as she opens her eyes. She thinks he has spared her from certain danger and Buster rises up out of the medication store with swathes and so forth in the nick of time to see them walk around into the dusk, affectionately intertwined. Another such second comes when Buster has experienced every kind of difficulty to acquire film of a group war going on in the city avenues, just to find that he had never stacked film into his camera. Simple turns, for example, these loan to the simple, fun watching that The Cameraman is. There is not a single significantly profound imagery in sight, and the absence of any endeavor at provocative cultural delineations tru ly loan to an effective bundle. This should be satire, and a heavenly one it is. Despite the fact that basic, the plot of The Cameraman is splendidly built.

My Summer of Memoir 5 Memoirs to Add to Your Reading List
My Summer of Memoir 5 Memoirs to Add to Your Reading List I read a lot of memoirs. Itâs more personal, and often more fun, than straight autobiography. And I donât like delineating strictly between âtruthâ and fiction, but I do like gleaning more about the lives of my favorite writers. Iâm reading (or have already read) a lot of memoir this summer. Sherman Alexieâs You Donât Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir Alexie has been one of of my favorite authors since I read the Absolutely True Diary, so I knew I would pick up his new memoir You Donât Have to Say You Love Me. What I didnât know was that I would be captivated by it. Itâs large, at 464 pages, evenly split between poetry and prose. But I read it in 4 days. This is Alexieâs Eulogy to his mother. Itâs also a poetic meditation on life, mental illness, the reservation, and that all familiar memoir narrative of leaving home. Alexie never claims to be writing fact: in fact at many points throughout the book he points out the flaws of his memory, the lies his family told him, and his struggles post brain surgery. But what Alexie so powerfully expresses is the difference between fact and truth, a truth born of emotion, love, and trauma, regardless of the fact. Even if youâve never read Alexie or donât like memoir, read this book. On paper, I have very little in common with Alexie. But Alexieâs recounting of his leaving home, escape into fiction, and struggles with mental illness made me feel, for 464 pages, that we had everything in common. Roxane Gayâs Hunger. Again, I already loved Roxane Gay. Her earlier works, be it Bad Feminist or essays across the internet, have been popular and important. But Hunger is emotionally raw. Memoirs are often confessional, exposing ideas that are often left unsaid. But Gayâs painful descriptions of her rape, trauma, and struggle with weight are so often unspoken itâs jarring and painful to read. But itâs important and beautiful. Gay, as only she can do, seamlessly weaves narrative memoir with cultural critiques of everything from celebrity weight loss endorsements to the difficulties of air travel. This isnât an easy read, and I put it down often, but itâs worth every moment of discomfort. Jesmyn Wards The Men We Reaped Iâm late to the program on this one, having never read National Book Award Winner Jesmyn Ward before this summer. I picked up The Fire This Time anthology after realizing there was a piece in it by Natasha Tretheway, one of my favorite poets. I was enthralled by Wardâs writng in this volume and immediately ordered The Men We Reaped and Salvage the Bones (which I dropped in a little free library in Nashville, I canât resist them). The Men We Reaped is Wardâs memoir, delineated by the tragic deathâs of important African American men in her life, closing with the young death of her brother. Interspersed between these strories are flashbacks to Wardâs childhood in Mississippi. Eventually, the flashbacks meet the present, where she recounts the story of her brother. Itâs both political and personal and certainly worth a read, especially in the context of Black Lives Matter and continued police violence against African Americans. North Toward Home by Willie Morris Published in 1967, North Toward Home is not a new read. Itâs the first in this list that I havenât yet read. My MA advisor recommended it to me years ago and I just got around to picking it up this summer. Knowing my love of Civil Rights history, coming of age memoir, and the South it seems a perfect fit. Iâm excited to read it this summer. The Diary of Anne Frank Okay, Iâm not sure if this is a memoir in the same way (it is a diary, after all). Whatâs more, I am admitting that I have never read it. In middle school, when it seemed everyone I knew was reading The Diary of Anne Frank, I refused to read anything I considered âsadâ (I know). So here I am, a 25 year old lover of memoirs and histories who has never read The Diary of Anne Frank. That ends this summer. Iâm just realizing how different this list is from a typical âsummer readsâ list. But here it does: some serious and seriously beautiful reading for that summer list. All for One - Literature Essay Samples
When faced with injustices, it is far easier to say one would act against them than actually physically or verbally doing so. In Franz Kafkaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"In The Penal Colony,â⬠when invited, an explorer is subjected to observe an inhumane execution where defendants are mercilessly murdered with inscriptions of their crimes. The officer, the procedureââ¬â¢s lone, surviving supporter, hopes that the explorer will agree with these methods; however, when he does not, the officer elects he himself to be put to death by the unjust machine. The explorerââ¬â¢s response, the lack of any remote notion of stopping the officer, reveals his internal conflict of acting or not acting, his strong sense of self-preservation, and his small sense of sympathy. As the officer strips in order to be placed in the machine, ââ¬Å"The explorer bit his lips and said nothingâ⬠(220) as if stopping himself from utilizing his power to stop the officer. It reveals an internal conflict within the explorer, in which he is hesitant to act but is aware that he should. Even when merely discussing the procedure itself, the explorer says, ââ¬Å"I was already wondering whether it would be my duty to intervene and whether my intervention would have the slightest chance of successâ⬠(216). This doubt is, therefore, a combination of both his ability to succeed and if he should make the attempt to begin with. The explorerââ¬â¢s doubt is made apparent through his action biting his lips as if in order to keep from saying something and as result, not acting. This hesitation reveals a somewhat cowardice aspect of the explorerââ¬â¢s character, as well as an insecurity of his power to influence. This internal conflict and cowardice also appears when the narrator states that ââ¬Å"If the judicial procedure which the officer cherished were really so near its end possibly as a result of [the explorerââ¬â¢s] own intervention to which he felt himself pledgedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (221), questioning himself about if he is to blame or not for the officerââ¬â¢s choice by merely being there. The explorer seems to be aware that he has influenced the officer, despite having previously saying, ââ¬Å"I can neither help nor hinder youâ⬠(213). His conflict between believing he has no influence but also seeing his impact to an extent, but not acting to purposely influence the officer and acting to save his life, then leans more towards a selfish motive. The psychological struggle and selfishness that the explorer endures is, however, quickly shadowed by his instinct to preserve himself, especially when the situation does not directly affect him. The narrator describes that, ââ¬Å"[The explorer] knew very well what was going to happen, but he had no right to obstruct the officer in anythingâ⬠(220-221). In knowing the consequences of allowing the officer to proceed in putting himself in the machine, the explorer rationalizes not saving the manââ¬â¢s life by saying it was not his choice to make, and it will not impact him in any way. In this way, he is far more invested in his own well being saying that he is ââ¬Å"going away early tomorrow morning, or at least embarking on [his] shipâ⬠(217) because he is able to escape the root of the issue and be free of the sight of it, it no longer will exist to him, proven when he ââ¬Å"quitted the teahouse and made for the harborâ⬠(226) at the first opportunity to escape t he colony. The explorer even convinces himself that ââ¬Å"the officer was doing the right thing; in his place the explorer would not have acted otherwiseâ⬠(221). He realizes that the execution system is immoral with his very clear statement of ââ¬Å"I do not approve of your procedureâ⬠(216) but justifies that the officer is taking the right course of action by killing himself and taking his own action rather than someone acting against him. Because the explorer believes that the officer is correct, his decision not to stop him is therefore right as well. Tied directly with selfishness, the explorerââ¬â¢s need to rationalize clearly wrong and morbid choices to make himself feel better is evidence of his strong sense of self-preservation. His detachment and disregard through this rationalization and believing it is not his ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠to intervene illustrates an instinctual response to save oneself first. Rivaled by other notions of selfishness, self-preservation, and cowardice, in the final lines describing his choice to not act to save the officer, the explorer is also revealed to have some sense of sympathy. Saying that ââ¬Å"in his place the explorer would not have acted otherwiseâ⬠(221) reveals that the explorer, in some way, admires the officer for his commitment to his beliefs because he believes he would act the same way that the officer does if it were him. Before this outright declaration that the officer is willing to die for his cause, the explorer, though he disagrees with the procedure, tells the officer, ââ¬Å"I shall tell the Commandment what I think of the procedures, certainly, but not at a public conference, only in privateâ⬠(217). The explorer seems to sympathize with the officer, electing to avoid shaming him by only discussing his disagreement in private. While mainly negative aspects are revealed in his contemplation, the explorer shows he is capab le of understanding another perspective through these sympathetic and almost admiring comments. In summation, inaction proves far more substantial to the characterization of the explorer, ironically, through the use action. The explorerââ¬â¢s inaction to prevent the officerââ¬â¢s suicide reveals parts of his character such as cowardice, insecurity, selfishness, self-preservation, and even some bits of sympathy through what he does do and his rationalizations for those actions. Rather than just saying he would act against these injustices and take the easy way out, though still acknowledging its existence, the explorer recognizes the injustice, yet allows it to fester by ignoring it and fabricating reasons for his decision to do as much.

Harrison Bergeron Reflection - 814 Words
In school we learn many things, from what we read, see, and hear; but I believe that there are a few specific stories students should read while at the high school. One short story in particular ââ¬Å"Harrison Bergeronâ⬠teaches a very important message to those who read it. In this short story we see a utopian society where everyone is exactly the same, but in the end teaches the reader that a society like that is horrible, and everyone should be themselves. In the society, people who are gifted, stronger, smarter, prettier, all need to wear a handicap that makes them ââ¬Å"equalâ⬠to those who are more ordinary.
